Supplier press release: Reducing Waste – It's All About Concentration

Cut packaging and product wastage by using super concentrates

Waste is expensive to manage and handle so it makes sense to avoid creating it in the first place. Switching to super concentrated cleaning products from Sealed Air's Diversey business is an ideal approach because it is simple and effective way to reduce waste with many other sustainability benefits.

Concentrates reduce the need for packaging because water is added at the point of use rather than the place of manufacture. This means that the amount of product stored and transported in any given size of container covers considerably more cleaning jobs than conventional bulk chemicals or ready-to-use (RTU) products. Transportation costs are up to 20 times less and warehouse and on-site storage requirements are up to 22 times less. These are useful benefits in their own right but less packaging is also needed which uses fewer natural resources and produces lower amounts of waste. Concentrates are good for sustainability.

With its innovative SmartDose, QuattroSelect, J-Flex and Exact platforms, Diversey (now part of Sealed Air) is the only supplier to offer building care contractors and cleaning teams total flexibility to choose efficient and sustainable super concentrated products for workplaces of any size. Each platform can be used with a complete range of concentrated products for spray bottles, buckets and scrubber driers for cleaning hard surfaces, worktops, desks and walls, sanitary areas and all types of floor. This allows users to introduce concentrates into their cleaning operations to achieve the best possible results with excellent sustainability, safety, efficiency and overall cost-in-use.

The SmartDose super concentrate system highlights the point well. One 1.4 litre container of SmartDose TASKI Sprint 200, for example, will prepare 280 standard 500ml trigger bottles. That means the amount of plastics used would be around 92 per cent less and total packaging would be reduced by as much as 95 per cent compared with using two five litre packs of standard product. That is a considerable difference in the resultant waste and the savings can be even bigger when comparing concentrates with RTU products.

Furthermore, all SmartDose containers are 100 per cent recyclable. All of this means that waste management and disposal costs associated with SmartDose are significantly less than conventional products.

What is more, the range includes two multipurpose formulations, TASKI Sani 4in1 for washrooms and TASKI Sprint 200 for hard surfaces, meaning there are further sustainability, supply chain and storage benefits to be gained by using a single product for the majority of daily cleaning tasks.

Of course concentrates are also supplied by some manufacturers in bulk containers. When these are mixed by the so-called "glug" method, product is simply poured into a receptacle before water is added. This can lead to wasteful over dosing of around 40 per cent with resultant poor cleaning performance and inconsistency. To be used most efficiently and effectively concentrates should ideally be used in conjunction with a dosing or dilution control system. These are similar in principle but while dosing control manages the amount of product dispensed, with no precise control over the amount of water used, dilution control automatically ensures the correct and accurate combination of product and water.

The accuracy and ease-of-use enabled by Diversey's platforms help users to predict, control and cut cost-in-use by up to 30 per cent because products are prepared consistently to the correct specification for optimum cleaning performance. This means no under- or overdosing, no wastage and no need for time-consuming and expensive repeat cleaning. Careful design and co-ordinated colour-coding of products and platform equipment promotes safety-in-use and simplifies training. Users can identify the platform and product that is most suited to their specific application by visiting Diversey's interactive website at www.diverseyconcentrates.com and answering a few simple questions.
