Spanish wines from United Wineries
Several newcomers emerged from United Wines at the recent Wines from Spain Tasting. Marqués de la Concordia Hacienda Abascal 2005 is the first vintage of the top wine from this state-of-the-art winery from the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero. Hacienda Abascal is a rich, ripe, deeply coloured wine from 100% Tempranillo. With dark black cherry and bramble fruits and aromas of violets, thyme, cherry and leather, the wine is textured, with silky tannins, good grip and a velvety body.
A new on-trade exclusive, Hacienda Zorita, is a dry red 100% Tempranillo from Castilla y Léon. Robust and round with many food matching possibilities, it is particularly good with roast lamb or well-marbled steaks as the balanced acidity cuts through the fattiness of these red meats.
Marqués de Monistrol Clos Cusco Cava comes from the single vineyard, Clos Cusco; an ancient walled vineyard where yields are carefully monitored to ensure the finest quality. It is crisp, dry and fresh with a fuller body than most Cavas and has ripe apple and lime fruit on the palate.
Also introduced were Berberana Cava Brut Cuvée, described as dry and elegant with floral aromas and clean citrus flavours; and Berberana Cava Rosé Brut with delicate aromas of ripe strawberries and raspberries.
