Shepherds Purse – Yorkshire Blue: Award winner
Excellence in Food and Drink Awards 2007
Category: Cheese, Dairy and Milk Products
Winner: Shepherds Purse Yorkshire Blue
Not only did this product bag the Cheese, Dairy and Milk Products category award, it was also the judges' choice for our Gold Award, selected from all the category winners for special recognition.
This is not its first award; since 1996 it has picked up the Champion Blue Cheese title at the Nantwich International Cheese Show, the British Cheese Awards Bronze Medal and the Daily Telegraph Taste of Britain Award to name just a few.
Artisan North Yorkshire cheesemaker Shepherds Purse has been making Yorkshire Blue from 100% cows' milk since 1995, and it was the company's first diversion from sheep's milk.
It is based on a Continental recipe noted for its soft, creamy texture and has been developed to give the cheese a buttery, sweet flavour with no sharp bite.
Indeed, the flavour was a huge hit with the judges, who described it as an "absolutely lovely" "gentle blue cheese" and agreed with Shepherds Purse that it would be enjoyed even by those who don't usually like blue cheese.
