Oleifera (Latin for oil-bearing seeds) is a new brand of premium, non-blended rapeseed oil launched by Borderfields, a group of Northumberland farmers close to Bamburgh near the Scottish border.
This 100% natural, cold-pressed culinary oil is said to be healthier than olive oil, with half the saturated fat content (at 6.5% rather than 14%) and 10 times the amount of omega-3 oils. The oil is cold-pressed to avoid the use of heating solvents, and the pulp byproduct is fed to cattle.
Borderfields trialled 14 varieties of rapeseed (one of the few oil-bearing seeds that will grow in cool, temperate conditions) before opting for an oil with a golden colour and a nutty flavour. Rapeseed oil can be heated to higher temperatures without burning than other oils, and its stability makes it suitable for a variety of uses, such as roasting, baking, dressings and mayonnaises.
