Jus-Rol calls on pie makers to enter British Pie Week
In support of British Pie Week from the 3 - 9 March 2014, Jus-Rol Professional has launched ‘Pievolution' as the Berwick based company celebrates its 60th year of giving pastry a modern twist.
A set of seven downloadable cards that look back over the past six decades of pastry and pie greatness. Each card is packed with recipe ideas, theme night inspiration, hints and tips, and key calendar dates to help chefs keep the traditional British dish firmly on the modern menu.
The case for home-made pub pies continues with research conducted by Toluna which identified pies as the ideal showcase for seasonal ingredients.
The survey found that 60% of consumers believe the best pies are made by local pub chefs putting them ahead of celebrity chefs.
According to the research, 60% of people eat two or three pies a month on average and pub chefs can make as much as 70% gross profit. The research also revealed that 46% of consumers would expect to pay more than £5 for a pub pie, 11% of 18-34-year-olds were willing to pay more than £8.
Further research from Technomic's MenuMonitor shows traditional fillings such as chicken & mushroom, steak & ale and steak & kidney still top the popularity tables, which noted an 89% year-on-year rise in specialty pies on UK menus.
However, 40% of consumers would like to see more ethnic flavours introduced into traditional dishes with chefs looking further afield to Latin America, Asia and Europe for new fillings such as beef empanada, chicken balti or spicy chickpea.
John McKears, senior sector controller, General Mills UK Ltd - Foodservice Professional, said: "Pievolution is designed to inspire chefs and to give them the confidence to put home-made pies at the centre of their menus.
