Hastings Herrings scoops 2012 Billingsgate Sustainable Seafood Award

Hastings Herrings has been crowned the Billingsgate Sustainable Seafood Champion at the Billingsgate Seafood School‘s annual Celebration of Sustainable Fish and Shellfish.

Hastings Herrings overcame some notable competition, including Norwegian MSC Frozen Cod, King Scallops, MSC Herring, British Tilapia, Alaska Salmon and Welsh Sea Bass.

The win was signed off by a panel of judges, including journalists, chefs and trade experts for its convincing and honest case for the sustainable catching of herring by the small in-shore Hastings fishing fleet.

CJ Jackson, CEO of Billingsgate Seafood School said: "We are delighted to be able to give this award to Hasting Herrings.

"Herring is a fish that has declined in popularity over the years, but it is a wonderful and inexpensive catch, which is packed full of Omega 3, we hope this award will see herrings back on more menus."
