Arthur Wharton Ale from Camerons Brewery
Arthur Wharton Ale is a World Cup-themed guest cask ale from North East brewer Camerons that celebrates a forgotten sporting legend from the region. Arthur Wharton (born, like Camerons, in 1865) was the world's first black professional footballer - playing for clubs such as Newcastle and Sheffield United - and the world's first 100-yard record holder. His birthplace in Ghana also links in with the World Cup being held for the first time on the African continent.
The light and refreshing 4% abv ale has a pale straw colour and a fruity, spicy, floral aroma, and will be sold locally through Coors Wholesale and nationally through Heineken's "Britain's Got Cask" guest ale scheme. It is the first in a new series of annual cask ales that will celebrate regional sporting heroes, with profits going to charity.
In this event, 10p in every pint sold will help build a commemorative statue of Wharton, while a further 5p will go to regional groups dealing with alcohol abuse (which played a part in Wharton's demise).
