London's Robata to open Birmingham restaurant

London restaurant Robata is planning to open a location in Birmingham city centre.

The team behind the Japanese izakaya-style venue has applied to convert a former Chilango site at 92-98 Colmore Row.

It will be the second site for Robata, which was launched by entrepreneur Sonny Huang in Soho in 2019.

The restaurant focuses on grilled charcoal cooking and offers a selection of small plates, alongside bao buns, sushi and sashimi.

Planning documents show the Birmingham site will undergo a full interior refit to create a new restaurant, bar and dining area.

Design agency Turnerbates, which created the branding, artwork and interior for Robata Soho and is working on the new site, tweeted that the Birmingham restaurant is due to open late this year.

The Caterer has contacted Robata for further comment.
