Staff ‘humbled' by support following fire at Andrew Pern's Star Inn the City

Staff at chef Andrew Pern's York restaurant Star Inn the City have been "humbled" by the support received after a fire at his caused "extensive but localised damage" to the kitchen roof early on Friday morning.

Fire crews were called to the Museum Street restaurant shortly after 5am.

Pern later tweeted: "Unfortunately, early this morning 9/11/18, we have had a fire at the Star Inn the City, York. Thank you to @NorthYorksFire for a swift response, nobody injured. Our great staff will have the place open as soon as possible, when we look forward to welcoming you back, will keep posted."

The restaurant's operations director Matt Hunter added: "I'm absolutely humbled at all the kind messages we have received today. I do take everything about @Starinnthecity personally, it's taken a while to settle in and we're comforted by all the love we have been sent from guests, peers and those in the trade I admire greatly."

Star in the City is one of four restaurants owned by Pern alongside the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, Star Inn the Harbour in Whitby and Mr P's Curious Tavern, a small plates-style restaurant in York.

Following the fire Mr P's Curious Tavern will extend its opening hours and offer dishes in the restaurant's style. A guest chef evening with Atul Kochhar will be moved to Star Inn the Harbour with coaches provided for guests.
