Pret A Manger sales break £500m in 2013

Sandwich bar operator Pret A Manger has reported sales up 15% to £510m for the 52 weeks to 2 January 2014.

It is the first time that sales at the company exceeded £500m. As a result, the company saw profits climb 9% to £67m.

The company, which was founded in 1986, said it created 600 new jobs during the same period, following the opening of 40 new shops both in the UK and internationally, taking the total number of outlets to 350.

Clive Schlee, Pret A Manger chief executive, described 2013 as "another successful year".

"Our charity work remains an important part of our business, and the Pret Foundation Trust raised a record £1.2m for homeless charities in 2013," he added.

The company's best-selling food items in 2013 were its porridge pots and the banana, and said that it now sells more cold pressed vegetable juices than super club sandwiches.
