What's its form? In a recent trading statement the company announced that turnover was expected to be about 35% higher than last year's £26.5m. This is in spite of fierce competition on the high street that has seen a number of high-profile operators struggling. Pre-tax profits in 2003 were £6.8m, a year-on-year increase of 31%.

Where is its head office and area of operation?
Headquarters is in Newcastle, where Ultimate began with the purchase of five bars and a hotel in 1997. It operates predominantly in the North-east of England, but is now expanding into the South. It also has sites in Belfast.

How does the future look?
The company is on the march and will open a new site in Leeds in September, as well as refurbishing its Brigg Market site in Newcastle next month. Expect another strong year of growth during 2005. Last year the company raised £20m through a share placing, giving it a war chest for its future expansion.
