Operators cash in on Veganuary with 117% rise in plant-based ordering reported

Operators are cashing in on Veganuary with a host of new dishes including Burger King's vegan nuggets, Honest Burgers' teriyaki plant and Wagamama's tempura f-ish + bang bang yaki-imo.

Delivery platform Deliveroo has reported a 117% growth in plant-based ordering across the UK compared to 2021 and a 153% rise in searches for vegan food in the app compared to the month before.

Elena Devis, vegan category lead at Deliveroo, said: "Earlier this year we asked the UK what they would like to see more of on delivery platforms, and nearly half of the survey respondents (48.5%) said they were keen to see more meat-free options. The UK's appetite for vegan food is one that just seems to be getting bigger and bigger every year which is why we're proud to offer such an incredible range of plant-based dishes available across restaurant and grocery menus. Vegan and plant-based food is a growth area we are really excited by at Deliveroo so we're super happy to be supporting Veganuary again this year."

Burger King also serves a vegan royale and a plant-based Whopper burger which launched in 2020 – however it emerged that this was not suitable for vegans as it was cooked on the same grill as its meaty counterpart.

The company's vegan nuggets have been developed by the Vegetarian Butcher and certified by the Vegan Society, and are made from soy and plant proteins.
