Hospitality and leisure sector most likely to take on apprentices

The hospitality and leisure industry is one of the more pro-active sectors in employing apprentices, according to the new Barclays Corporate Banking's Job Creation Survey.

Mike Saul, head of hospitality and leisure at Barclays, said that by making up more than 10% of the workforce, the hospitality and leisure sector plays an important role in the UK economy.

“We have already seen positive steps being taken to support young people, with some of London’s top hoteliers pledging 1,000 new jobs for 16-24 year olds within the next two years, and it’s great that there is a drive to ensure this continues to gathers momentum,” he explained.

Previous research from Barclays has revealed that more than half (52%) of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) would not take on apprentices due to the time involved and the red tape required.

To help smaller businesses overcome such barriers to taking on apprentices, the Barclays Bridges into Work programme will help companies access grants, find applicants, and train young people ahead of the role.
