Tantons Hotel, Bideford

This week's featured property is a north Devon hotel with a bit of a past.

The 51-bedroom Tantons hotel (www.tantonshotel.co.uk) is located adjacent to the Torridge Estuary in the pretty coastal town of Bideford, once a thriving port.

A listed building dating mainly from the 18th century, its notable features include a gilded ship's figurehead set above the hotel entrance. Locals say the figurehead was left as a deposit by a ship's captain for repairs to his damaged ship, and in latter years it became the practice for sailors to salute the statue while sailing up the estuary.

Recent additions to the hotel include the Kipling Suite functions room, which has a separate guest entrance, dance floor, bar and attached kitchen, catering for up to 150 guests. A second reception/conference room, the Riverside Suite, caters for 250 people.

Local agent Westcountry Commercial is marketing the freehold interest of the property off an asking price of £1,650,000.
