Sheraton Grand London Park Lane evacuated following ceiling collapse

Around 500 people were evacuated from the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane on Sunday afternoon when a water leak caused a ceiling to collapse.

One guest received a small cut to the head and was treated by paramedics at the scene. Everyone else escaped uninjured as 30 firefighters were called to the scene.

The incident took place in the in the Silver Gallery. At the time 200 wedding guests were gathered in the balcony area of the ballroom, one level below.

Guests were allowed back into the 303-bedroom hotel on Piccadilly after firefighters confirmed that the property was safe.

A spokesperson for the hotel said: "The Silver Gallery remains closed while repair work takes place. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused."

The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, which opened in 1927 as the Park Lane hotel, joined the premier tier of the Sheraton brand, following the completion of a multi-million pound renovation. Marriott, owner of the Sheraton brand, operates the Art Deco property on behalf of the freehold owner, Sir Richard Sutton Settled Estates, which also owns the nearby Athenaeum hotel.

The damage at the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane occurred four weeks after a similar incident at the Savoy hotel, London, when a section of the ceiling of the Lancaster ballroom collapsed, No-one was injured. The ballroom remains closed for ongoing repair work while the rest of the hotel remains open.
