Savoy bartender wins Barcardi Legacy Cocktail competition

Tom Walker, bartender of the American Bar at London's Savoy hotel has been crowned UK champion of the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition.

For the past year Walker worked tirelessly on promoting his Bacardi Superior cocktail creation, the Maid in Cuba, to a new global audience with guest appearances in 80 bars around the world. He will now go on to compete in the Bacardi Legacy World Final, in Moscow in April 2014.

Walker explained that the Maid in Cuba pays homage to classic cocktails, such as the Mojito and the Daiquiri, as well as the contemporary classic, the Old Cuban.

"In the same way that Harry Craddock [barman at the American Bar in the 1920s and 1930s who invented the White Lady cocktail] took an American invention and made something applicable to the British public, so too was the aim of this cocktail."

The Maid in Cuba combines Barcadi Superior with lime juice, sugar syrup, cucumber slices and mint leaves.
