Premier Inn to open its tallest UK hotel

Premier Inn is preparing to open what will become its tallest hotel in the UK, as well as one of its largest.

The new 400-bedroom venue in Westferry, east London, will occupy 28 storeys of a 30-storey building next to the Westferry Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station near Canary Wharf.

The hotel brand's parent company Whitbread will take a 30-year lease of the hotel and a restaurant space from developer Rockwell Property. They will sit alongside 66 new apartments and a ground-floor retail space.

It will be Premier Inn's largest hotel in London outside of its airport hotels. The restaurant, on the ground floor, will be a Whitbread-branded operation.

The news came after Rockwell Property was granted planning permission on the site, which has been derelict for more than a decade, from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in October.

Louise Woodruff, acquisitions manager for Premier Inn, said: "We're very excited to bring Premier Inn to Canary Wharf Westferry in what will be our tallest hotel in the UK. Aside from our hotels at Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, this 400-bedroom hotel will be the largest Premier Inn in London, which reflects the strong demand we're experiencing in east London and especially around Canary Wharf."

Construction is due to start in summer 2019.
