IHG signs Crowne Plaza in Newcastle upon Tyne

A new Crowne Plaza hotel is to open in Newcastle, at the centre of a newly regenerated business district.

The 251-bedroom Crowne Plaza Newcastle - Stephenson Quarter, which will be launched within a 10-acre site currently being developed adjacent to Newcastle Central Station, will operate under a management agreement with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).

Incorporating the largest conference and banqueting space in central Newcastle, the hotel is being developed by Silverlink. It will also have a health and fitness suite, swimming pool, sauna and gym.

Robert Shepherd, IHG's chief development officer Europe, said the hotel will help to anchor Newcastle's newest business district. "To be at the heart of Newcastle's strategic regeneration, delivering a great new hotel and to be creating economic growth, providing employment and training opportunities, is something we are very proud of and excited about," he explained.

There are currently nearly 400 Crowne Plaza hotels worldwide, with a further 98 in the pipeline.

Set to open in early 2014, the 94-bedroom new-build hotel, close to Brighton's railway station, will operate under a franchise agreement with Fourshore.

There are now 11 Hotel Indigo properties in Europe, with a further 13 in the pipeline.
