How can I return to hotel work?

Question

I would like to return to work in the hotel industry after a 20-year gap. My last job was reception manager in a London hotel, but for the last four years I have been running my own retail business. How hard would it be for me to return to work, and are there any courses that could help me update my skills?

Answer

!Lesley Reynolds, chief executive of Portfolio International: Technology has moved on since you were last a reception manager and the job function has changed immeasurably, but let's not forget it's still reception, and communication is the key. It doesn't sound as if your management skills have been lost if you've been running a retail business. I would certainly look into some of the reception systems, such as Fidelio, and understand what's happened since you left. Be realistic about where you restart you may need to become a number two to get back in and may have more luck with the independents than the large chain hotels.
