"Judges were impressed by the hotel's all-round appeal to different groups, from corporate guests to families with children, and its ability to juggle these successfully" The Hotel of the Year - Independent Catey not only honours a successful business that can demonstrate excellence in its market but, recognising the importance of innovation and creativity to individual owner-operators that may not have the bigger budgets of larger hotel groups, it also rewards the property that best offers an inspiring example to others in the sector. It was this aspirational quality that propelled the family-owned Calcot Manor, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, to the top of the list as last year's winner in this category. Described by the judges as "an exceptional hotel that is at the top of its three-star category and happy to be there", the 28-bedroom property was praised for its desire to consistently improve its offer while retaining a high standard of service. Previously a 14-bedroom traditional country house hotel, Calcot Manor had been transformed by its owners, the Ball family, into a contemporary hotel with modern facilities. Judges were extremely impressed by the hotel's all-round appeal to different groups, from corporate guests to families with children, and its ability to juggle these successfully. Evidence of achievement during the judging year, one of the criteria in this category, was demonstrated by an extensive renovation and development programme at Calcot Manor. A new luxury spa and gym was built, creating significant revenue from the introduction of outside membership; and the hotel's Conservatory restaurant was fully renovated, adding a new bar and a display kitchen. The new dedicated children's play area and mini-cinema aimed at teenagers has meant the hotel has become a popular spot for parents seeking a relaxing break knowing their offspring are well catered for. And if there was any remaining doubt in the minds of the judges as to the quality of Calcot Manor's nomination, the hotel's improved financial performance, with an increase in pre-tax profits, cemented its position as the 2004 Catey winner. "For a family-run operation to ring in so many changes is a true achievement," summarised one of the judging panel. If you know of somebody who can match such high standards to win the 2005 Catey for Hotel of the Year - Independent, fill in the form on the back page of this brochure. The deadline for receipt of entries is Friday 4 February and judging will take place at a London BaxterStorey contract. Judges' Criteria The Hotel of the Year - Independent will be an independent business of three units or fewer, wholly owned and operated by its owner. It will: - Be a successful business of any size, category or market level. - Show excellence in its chosen market. - Offer an example to which others can aspire. - Be able to demonstrate particular achievements in the past year. Don't forget All nominations in this category MUST be accompanied by a supporting statement.
