Hilton to launch Conrad in UAE and other international hotel news

Hilton to launch Conrad in UAE Hilton Hotels Corporation is to launch its luxury hotel brand Conrad in the United Arab Emirates with the opening of the Conrad Abu Dhabi in 2009.

The 380-room hotel, which will be Hilton's fourth property in Abu Dhabi, will be located on the city's Corniche and also offer 80 serviced apartments situated around a private lagoon. It will include a number of restaurants as well as meeting rooms, a luxury spa, health club and private beach.

Its announcement follows other recent launch announcements from Conrad, including the luxury Conrad resort and spa in Koh Samui, Thailand, the Conrad Shanghai, and the re-brand of the Hilton Maldives resort and spa.

Compass Portuguese business in investigation
Compass Group has announced that last month its Portuguese business, Eurest (Portugal) Sociedade Europeia Restaurantes LDA, was visited by the Portuguese Competition Authority (PCA) as part of an investigation into possible past breaches of competition law.

The company added that the investigation, which also involves other caterers in the sector, relates to a part of its Portuguese catering business which services mainly public sector contracts.

It added that it is fully cooperating in the ongoing investigation, which is likely to take a number of months to complete. Compass said it did not foresee any financial impact resulting from the investigation.

Golden Tulip to enter China
Golden Tulip Hospitality is to launch its first hotel in China with the opening of the Golden Tulip Shanghai Riverside in April this year.

The Swiss-Dutch based hotel company will take over the management of the hotel after signing an agreement with Shanhai Eastern Airline Hospitality.

Hans Kennedie, president and chief executive officer of Golden Tulip Hospitality, said: "We are delighted and very excited to welcome the first hotel in China. It is our goal to have a Chinese network of 200 hotels across the country in the medium to long term and we are proud to be able to enter with such a landmark property."

Accor adds three Novotels in Indonesia
Accor is to expand its Indonesian portfolio with the opening of three Novotel hotels in late 2008. The openings include the 220-room Novotel Simatupang Jakarta, the 160-room Novotel Lampung and the 230-room Novotel Pekanbaru.

The Novotel Simatupang Jakarta will include a business centre, ballroom, two restaurants, lounge-bar and pub, swimming pool, fitness centre and spa, as well as Wi-Fi coverage in all rooms and public areas. The Novotel Lampung will feature a 2,400sq m ballroom, business centre, two restaurants, swimming pool, fitness centre and a spa.

The 230-room Novotel Pekanbaru will include two restaurants, ballroom, business centre, entertainment centre, swimming pool and spa and fitness complex.

Marriott rolls out high-def TVs in the USA and Canada
Marriott International is to roll out high-definition, LCD televisions with a digital connectivity panel in all guest rooms across its JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, and Renaissance Hotels & Resorts brands in the USA and Canada over the next two years.

Guests will be able to connect a host of digital devices to view on the flat panel, high-definition screen, including laptops, camcorders, digital cameras, video games by using the new plug-in panel in each room.

Marriott plans to have the new technology installed in 25% of its JW Marriott, Marriott and Renaissance guest rooms in the USA and Canada, totalling nearly 40,000 rooms, by the end of 2007, with the roll-out set be completed by the end of 2009.
