Charles Wells buys pub and hotel in Boxworth

Pub operator Charles Wells has bought the Golden Ball hotel, a thatched property dating back to the 16th century in the Cambridgeshire village of Boxworth, off an asking price of £1.6m.

The pub includes seating for 40 diners in the bar and 50 in the restaurant, with another 40 seats offered outside where the landscaped gardens with pagoda and patio has enough space to erect a marquee for functions and weddings.

A separate 11-bedroom hotel was added in 2003.

The property includes two-bedroom accommodation for the owners.

The Ipswich office of Christie + Co sold the freehold off a guide price of £1.6m on behalf of local businessman Roche Bentley, who acquired the property as a run-down pub in 1986.
