Words from the Wise – Lucy Haines

Words from the Wise – Lucy Haines

Lucy Haines, managing director of Vinopolis, shares her business secrets

Lead from the front
I am a firm believer that you should always lead by example. I wouldn't expect my team at Vinopolis to do anything that I wouldn't do myself and I like to think that everyone will always do the best thing for the business. It's more than just work - it's about passion and immersing yourself in the company and the industry as a whole. My first boss inspired me to work this way - it's always best to be honest and do things the right way, even if it takes longer or makes the task more difficult.

Work hard, play hard
It's important to work hard and throw yourself into your work but it's equally important to take the time to relax and let your hair down after a long week. Working too hard isn't good for anyone and can actually make a business less productive. Taking time out gives your brain time to refresh, ready for a new day in the office.

Value your team
One thing that I am always aware of is that a business is a team. It's essential that team members feel valued and that they are respected equally no matter what position or level of seniority they hold within the company. On the other hand, I think it is also important to make sure that your team respect you as a leader and see you as an authority figure rather than a friend. It's great to be able to have fun at work but when all is said and done, it is a business.

Celebrate success
Teams must be kept motivated and incentivised to continue performing well. I always take the time to congratulate someone who has done an outstanding job. As a business, it is easy to just carry on setting higher goals and targets without taking the time to reflect and recognise some of the successes you have all achieved.

Be observant
Never stop learning and looking for things that could relate to your business. Even simple things like the commute to work, exploring the local area and talking to residents can inspire you and plant the seed for some great ideas. There are many things in everyday life that can be used for work if you apply them in the right way.

Best piece of advice
Enjoy the journey. Everyone has a lot of high goals to reach and hurdles to overcome during their career but it is important to enjoy what you are doing and keep learning from your experiences. This has been key for me throughout my career in the hospitality industry and I make sure I pass it on to anyone who will listen.

Mantra/Motto Passion and hard work is enough to see anything through - you just have to believe in what you are doing
