SSP launches Flying Hippo family dining concept

Travel concession operator SSP has launched its new family dining concept Flying Hippo at Newcastle Airport.

The unveiling came as part of a £14m revamp of the airport and has created 30 new jobs.

With a focus on local suppliers, including Dropswell Farm and Manners Butchers, Flying Hippo offers a broad menu offer that includes classic cooked breakfasts, American-style pancakes, ribs, wings, burgers and pizza, as well as smoked brisket and pulled pork from the restaurant's smoking oven.

SSP's chief marketing officer, Lucy Knowles, said: "Since its launch just weeks ago, Flying Hippo has already proved to be a great success and popular choice with families.

"It offers the quality of a family restaurant with the flexibility of a food-to-go venue, making it a unique addition to the airport that we are excited to offer in light of its recent redevelopment. This is a first for Newcastle and we have exciting plans to introduce the concept in other parts of the country."
