Bad news on bacon Some 70% of pig meat imported into Britain comes from animals produced under conditions which would be deemed illegal in the UK, claims a new report from the Meat & Livestock Commission. The amount of pork and processed products, such as bacon, imported last year rose by 14% to nearly 770,000 tonnes.

Keeping coffee going Kraft Foods has expanded its sustainable coffee initiative from Europe to the UK. From now, a range of its Kenco and Maxwell House soluble coffees, which are mixed with a small proportion of beans certified as meeting the sustainability standards of the Rainforest Alliance, will be available.

Action to save eels The Environment Agency has imposed a ban on eel netting along 200 miles of agency-owned riverbank in Lincolnshire and in parts of Cambridgeshire, to protect dwindling numbers. The agency said it would not lease out netting rights for the foreseeable future.
