Which? report slams holiday resort hygiene
Many hotels in popular overseas holiday resorts run dirty kitchens and serve contaminated food, says a Holiday Which? survey.
Samples were taken from 47 hotel restaurants in Majorca, Spain, the Algarve, Portugal and the Dominican Republic.
In Majorca the surveyors found contaminated food, including eight salads containing E coli, in 17 of the 19 hotels visited.
Half the 20 hotels in the Algarve had unacceptable levels of bacteria, while in the Dominican Republic seven out of eight hotels were found to serve contaminated food.
Particular concerns included dirty crockery, pans and glasses, flies in kitchens and lukewarm food that should have been piping hot.
"We found dirty conditions, staff apparently ignorant of basic principles of hygiene and food contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria," said the report.
