Torquay hoteliers get security boost

Hoteliers in Torquay have won a Home Office grant of £69,000 to help in the fight against crime.

The Torquay Hotels and Caterers Association has teamed up with police and Torbay Council to use the money to improve security at hotels and guesthouses, particularly those which have been burgled or suffered theft.

Former association chairman John Wilbraham of the Ansteys Cove hotel, who is leading the crackdown, said any of its 230 members could ask police to carry out a survey to find out how to improve security, and at what cost.

He added: "Money will be given on a matched-funding basis; so, effectively, £138,000 could be spent on making life more difficult for criminals. Often, minor precautions can be effective in putting off burglars."
