Singh is TV chef of the year
Tony Singh, head chef on the Royal Yacht Britannia, has won the ITV Chef of the Year competition, presented on the station's This Morning show.
Singh, 28, who has been cooking on the floating conference venue docked in Edinburgh since 1998, beat five other finalists in the cook-off held last month at Westminster College, London.
The other entrants comprised runner-up Greg Nicholson, of Brown's, London; Jeff Bland, of the Balmoral, Edinburgh; David Massey, of Brompton Bay, London; David Cameron, of the Village Bistro, Jersey; and Christina Bricknell-Webb, of Percy's at Coombe Head, Devon.
The six were chosen by viewers of This Morning out of a line-up of 10 who appeared on the ITV programme. More than 2,500 had originally entered the contest, and they were eventually whittled down by a panel of judges including ThisMorning‘s resident chef, John Torode, and Westminster College chef-lecturer Peter Richards.
All the contestants had 30 minutes to choose from a mystery basket of ingredients and devise a one-course meal, before cooking the dish in an hour. Singh's winning recipe was roast loin of lamb with aubergine compote and Asian pesto.
Judges at the final included food writer Maguerite Patten, John Torode, Paul Gayler, executive chef at the Lanesborough hotel, and Coronation Street star Helen Worth.
