Ramsay Scholar finalists announced

The five finalists for the Gordon Ramsay Scholar 2002 have been announced following four regional semi-finals held around the UK. The winners of each regional cook-off will now compete with the winner of the competition's college final, Mark Ruck from Stratford-Upon-Avon College. Each will aim to succeed the event's inaugural scholar, Gemma Blow, in the grand final that takes place on 30 October in London.

The four regional winners are: David Abbot, chef de partie at La Trompette, Chiswick, London; Christopher Bell, sous chef at Michael Deane's restaurant in Belfast; Lucy Hyder, sous chef at Bacchanalian restaurant, Hotel-on-the-Park, Cheltenham; and Scott Price, chef de partie, Rampsbeck Country House Hotel, Ullswater.

At the grand final the five young chefs will be challenged to prepare, cook and present four portions of an amuse-gueule, main course and dessert from a mystery box of ingredients in a time-span of two-and-a-half hours. At stake for the winner, in addition to the prestige of the title, is a £5,000 cash prize, two stages in internationally-renowned kitchens, a stage at Gordon Ramsay restaurant and a trip to sponsor Villeroy and Boch's headquarters in Luxembourg.

Look out for the report on the final next month in Caterer.
