Kickstarting my career in bar management

Question

I am 22 years old and have some experience in bar work. I would like to manage a bar either in the UK or abroad, but I'm not sure what the first step is. Should I go to college or get on-the-job training? Please give me some tips on where I should start looking for a job.

!
Most managed pub companies will have a structured training and career path. I would recommend you look for a company that supports both your career and personal aspirations. This needs to be a place where you feel you can get on with the job and the people and enjoy being a part of the company. There are many ways you can start this process, but first I would sit down and think about the key things you are looking for, such as career opportunity, training, style of outlet, type of business and salary. Then use the internet and make contact with the three companies that best suit your needs. Find out if you could do a short-term work placement in one of their local bars. If not, pop round to your local pub and speak to some of the staff. This should enable you to find out more about the company at the grass-roots level to enable you make a sound decision.
