SANDWICHES ARE TOP FAST FOOD

Sandwiches are now Britain's most popular fast food, with consumers spending more on commercially made versions than any other convenience food. According to the British Sandwich Association, the market is valued at £3.25b, with an annual growth of about 13%.

EDINBURGH CHEF SCOOPS PRIZE

Dougie MacDonald, executive chef at Standard Life, Canonmills, Edinburgh, has won the Specially Selected Chef competition. The event was organised by the Scotch Quality Beef and Lamb Association in conjunction with Gardner Merchant and was intended to highlight the use of cheaper cuts of Scotch beef and lamb in recipes.

MacDonald's winning dish was slow-cooked rib flap of beef with potato, Arran mustard and horseradish purée, braised red chard leaves and a casserole of beans and chorizo.
