WTTC forecasts
Tourism will directly and indirectly generate some £104b in the UK this year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. By 2010, this will reach £173b, with £75.6b directly from tourism. Tourism is expected to continue supporting about 3.4 million UK jobs.
Double express
Oriel Leisure has acquired two new sites to build Holiday Inn Express hotels. The first, four miles east of Manchester city centre on the A57, will have 97 bedrooms. The second, three miles south of Gloucester on the A38, will have 106.
Quality in Paddington
The LTH Group of Hotels has relaunched the London-London Hotel as the Quality Hotel Paddington following a £500,000 renovation of the 75-bedroom property it bought last November.
Drink and fly
Pub group JD Wetherspoon has spent £2m on two new pubs and two kiosks in the new retail complex in Edinburgh Airport. The company runs eight other pubs in Scotland.
Radisson rebuild
Radisson Edwardian is seeking planning permission for a £20m project to demolish its three-star, 95-bedroom Savoy Court hotel in London and rebuild it as a 174-bedroom, five-star property.
