Glitch sends bills soaring

Thousands of hotel guests in the USA have been grossly overcharged for their stay because of a credit card processing error.

Up to 26,000 guests were afffected, staying at Six Continents Hotels' Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express brands between 24 and 27 October 2002.

A glitch in the system of First Horizon Merchant Services, Six Continents' credit card processor, meant that the decimal point was dropped during the processing of these transactions, resulting in bills 100 times higher than they should have been.

Six Continents is offering affected guests two free nights at any of these three brands.
