From finance manager to general manager

Question

I'm a 51-year-old financial controller of a construction company. Four years ago I worked in a four-star hotel and was manager of the administration and finance department. My dream is to re-establish myself in the hotel industry.

I've recently applied for a general manager position in a 30-bedroom, three-star hotel and have been selected for an interview. However, I'm not sure whether I should attend the interview, because I don't have work experience in a general manager position. I am keen to take on the challenge and responsibility, though. What do you think I should do?

I think your comment about your dream to work in the hotel industry is your passport to success. As you have been invited for an interview, the employer obviously thinks you have the skills to do the job. You need to demonstrate your passion and enthusiasm for the business and the fact that your skills are transferable from one industry to another. Focus on your achievements in your current role, particularly in terms of man-management, financial success, budgeting and leadership. You will also need to do some research and gain some background knowledge of the company for which you have an interview.
