Finding a live-in job

Finding a live-in job

Question

I have been asked by some Italian friends how their son can find a live-in job in London. The young man is 23 years old and spent five years at an Italian catering school, where he studied all aspects of catering and then specialised as a cook. During his studies he did some work as a chef and did work experience in Germany. In the summer he worked as a chef for six months in a hotel restaurant.

I have telephoned an agency in London who, without asking his qualifications, said he should come to London and approach hotels directly. With rents so high in London and there being thousands of hotels, this could be a very expensive way to find live-in employment. Can you kindly advise on his best route?

I would advise that your friends' son sends his CV and references to as many hoteliers as possible. He should also look at Web sites advertising live-in jobs such as [Caterer.com. His qualifications and experience will be welcomed by hoteliers, so he shouldn't have any problems finding live-in work in London. If he doesn't find suitable employment via this route, I would suggest that he comes to London and stays in a hostel, which will save money and allow time to look for live-in work. On arrival he can register with a reputable catering recruitment agency which will help him look for temporary and live-in work. Thousands of overseas travellers from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa take this option every year and enjoy having the flexibility of working while travelling at the same time.
