England's oldest pub is up for sale

England's oldest public house, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, Hertfordshire, is up for sale.

The pub, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records, is an 11th-century structure set on an 8th-century site. It was originally located close to St Albans Cathedral and was moved to the present site on Abbey Mill Lane after the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is held on the remainder of a 10-year franchise lease from Mitchells & Butlers ending in 2019 and has been put on the market for £150,000.

Paul Tallentyre, director of pubs at Davis Coffer Lyons, who is marketing the pub, said: "This is a charming building which has been added to over the years but the original timber-framed structure is clearly visible.

"Such a great looking and unspoilt traditional pub in such a scenic and historical location is a rare opportunity. Inside, this is a classic, cosy local with a characterful sunken bar room in the original cockfighting pit."
