Edward Irwin joins Mitchells & Butlers board as non-executive director

Pub company Mitchells & Butlers has appointed Edward Irwin as a non-executive director.

Irwin is a representative of Elpida, a significant shareholder in Mitchells & Butlers, owned by Irish tycoons JP McManus and John Magnier. Irwin is the finance director of Coolmore, a thoroughbred horse breeding company, owned by McManus and Magnier.

Commenting on the appointment, executive chairman Bob Ivell said: "I am pleased to welcome Mr Irwin to the board and we look forward to working with him to continue to drive the performance of the business forward. Elpida is a supportive shareholder and we are confident that having Mr Irwin on the board will be both positive and constructive. Our search for both a new chief executive and for independent non-executive directors is progressing well."

Elpida holds over 20% of shares in Mitchells & Butlers, while billionaire currency trader Joe Lewis owns 23%.
