A hotel in honour of Everton footballer Dixie Dean is to open in Liverpool city centre next year.
Hotel operator Signature Living, which also owns the Shankly hotel, will start refurbing the site in September. It will include restaurants, bars and an events space.
Dean holds the record for most goals scored in a single season. During his career, he scored 383 goals in 433 appearances for Everton, won two league titles, and an FA Cup.
The Dixie Dean hHotel, which will showcase memorabilia from the footballer's career, has the full support of Deanâs family.
Granddaughter Melanie Prentice, said: âThe Dixie Dean hotel cements my grandfatherâs status as a footballing icon, and I couldnât be prouder of the amazing plans for this hotel.
âDixie was great friends with Bill Shankly. They had an enduring friendship despite representing rival teams, so itâs good to see them commemorated side by side. It means their legends will live on.â
Signature Living founder Lawrence Kenwright said: âThis project will help further regenerate what was, until recently, a forgotten corner of the city centre. Itâs now thriving, with top hotels, restaurants and bars.
âWe expect our planned âFootball Quarterâ to create hundreds of jobs, attract further investment into Liverpool and boost this brilliant cityâs tourism offer.â
