Michelin reveals 2019 stars for Great Britain and Ireland

Core by Clare Smyth, Mark Birchall's Moor Hall and James Knappett's Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs were all awarded two Michelin stars at the launch on Monday of the 2019 guide for Great Britain and Ireland.

There were no new three-star presentations or new accolades for Scotland or Wales at the ceremony, held at the BFI IMAX cinema in London, despite a record year that saw 21 new one Michelin star accolades handed out and three two stars. There are now a total of 155 one Michelin star establishments, 20 two-star and five three-star in Great Britain and Ireland.

Clare Smyth previously headed the kitchen at three-Michelin-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea. Her restaurant, Core, has now entered the guide with two stars a year after opening in London's Kensington. She told The Caterer

Smyth was presented with the accolade by mentor Gordon Ramsay who added: “Brilliant. Obviously a talented lady, great for the guide, great for the team and three new two stars is brilliant â€" we just need more three stars now.”

Speaking after accepting the award for two stars, Birchall, chef-patron at Moor Hall, Aughton, Lancashire, said: “You can’t expect this stuff. I know what we do every day and our guests love it. You don’t expect it, you can’t expect anything in life. The only thing that changes is we try and improve every day.” Moor Hall was awarded one star last year, seven months after Birchall opened the seven-bedroom hotel with business partners Andy and Tracey Bell.

Camden’s Kitchen Table at Bubbledogs proved the surprise of the evening. The 20-seater restaurant, won its first star in 2014. Head chef Knappett told The Caterer: “I'm just blown away [and] so proud of my whole team, my wife, six of cooking every service, turning up every day, I’m blown away. Now we’ll go back, maintain the two, get ready to win the third, it’s probably years away but we’re not going to stop chasing that now.”

Amongst the new one-star announcements six were from London including Brat in Hackney, Sabor in Westminster and Hide in Mayfair. Pubs across the country made a strong showing at this year’s awards with four awarded one star: Tim Allen’s Flitch of Bacon in Essex, Tom Parker's White Swan in Fence, Lancashire, Fordwich Arms in Canterbury and Dom Robinson's Blackbird in Newbury.

Tim Allen said: “I am absolutely delighted the Inn has achieved its first Michelin star. It has been a challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable journey for myself and the team. I have always seen food as a way to connect people and share special experiences and we will continue to host our guests and let them leave with happy memories each and every time.”
