Chef-restaurateur Jason Atherton has teamed up with Marriott International's lifestyle brand Edition for the third time with the opening of three restaurants in Shanghai.
The launch of the outlets follows on from the success of Berners Tavern at the London Edition, which opened in 2013, and the Clocktower at the New York Edition, which opened in 2015 and went on to be awarded a Michelin star in the 2018 edition of the Michelin guide to the Big Apple.
Edition hotels were created by interior designer Ian Schrager and Marriott International and today numbers seven properties worldwide.
The Shanghai restaurants are located in two separate towers: one which was built in 1929 and which at one time housed the headquarters of Shanghai Power Company, while the other is a modern skyscraper.
Canton Disco is Athertonâs first restaurant partnership with Hong Kong based-restaurant group, Black Sheep, with a menu curated by chef Jowett Yu from Black Sheepâs Ho Lee Fook in Hong Kong.
Hiya, meaning âclouds in the skyâ in Japanese, has been inspired by Athertonâs Japanese Izakaya-style restaurant, Sosharu in London, which opened in Clerkenwell in 2016 and closed over the summer. Atherton plans to relocate Sosharu elsewhere in London, possibly Soho or Mayfair.
Executive chef of Atherton's the Social Company group, Alex Craciun, is relocating from the UK to oversee the launch of Hiya, while all three Shanghai restaurants are being headed by chef de cuisine Scott Melvin, who has worked with Atherton for 14 years and was previously executive chef at Athertonâs the Commune Social, also in Shanghai.
Atherton said: "This is our third project with Edition and Ian Schrager - we couldnât be prouder to be part of this exciting launch. Ian has been a very important figure in my life since embarking on our partnership, first with Berners Tavern in London and then the Clocktower in New York which was awarded a Michelin star in 2017. For us to now be bringing our flagship restaurants to Shanghai is just incredible."
Since launching the Social Company in 2011 with the opening of Pollen Street Social in London, which was awarded a Michelin star six months later, the group today operates seven restaurants in London and a further seven in Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, the Philippines and Dubai.
