Von Essen Hotels*

*No longer trading

Founded in 1996 by entrepreneur Andrew Davis with the aid of a trust fund set up by his Austrian aunt, the Countess von Essen, Von Essen Hotels rapidly made its mark by engaging in a landgrab of some of the UK’s most

Operating Data:

The group comprised 31 hotels, divided into five collections, when it entered administration in April 2011. Four hotels (highlighted in red) were owned separately from the Von Essen portfolio by founder Andrew Davis.

Most of the hotels were freeholds, with just four leaseholds in the collection - Sharrow Bay, Lewtrenchard Manor and the National Trust-owned Cliveden and Ickworth hotels.

All but four properties were located in England: the exceptions were in Scotland, Wales (two) and France.
