Latin American hotel brand Selina launches in Manchester

Latin-American creative and community-spirited hotel brand Selina has launched into the UK with the opening of a 37-bedroom property in Manchester.

Located in the Northern Quarter of the city, Selina NQ1 is designed by Lorna Keller with a nod to its South American heritage as well as the creativity of Manchester, featuring works from local artists.

It incorporates a restaurant, bar, coffee shop, Irish pub and basement club, with a curated programme of music events and workshops. A co-working space will launch in the coming months.

The restaurant, Wilson's Social, is named after record label owner Tony Wilson. Dishes include agave and jalapeno glazed chicken wings, black pepper tofu with marinated watermelon and cucumber, lemon and saffron chicken kebab flatbreads, and pan-fried sea bass fillets with whipped avocado.

A total of 132 beds are split between the 37 bedrooms, suites and shared rooms for between three and eight guests, including a female-only option. Prices range from £25 to £70, depending on room category.

Erwin de Jong Oliveir, head of UK for Selina, said: "Being able to bring Selina to Manchester is such an exciting opportunity, we wanted to blend Selina's Latin American roots with the rich history of Manchester to infuse the aesthetics together and provide a hub for digital nomads around the world."

Founded in Latin America in 2015, Selina currently operates in 50 locations throughout South America and Europe, with an average of one new hotel opening each week. The name Selina comes from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon.

Properties are expected to be open in around 100 locations by 2022, with a second UK site set to launch in Birmingham at the end of September, followed by a Liverpool property opening by the end of the year.
